On August 18, 2020, Ambassador Sun Gongyi paid an official call on Ambassador Haymandoya Dillum, the new Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of Mauritius. The two sides exchanged views on practical cooperation between China and Mauritius in various fields as well as deepening bilateral relations. Political Counselor Gong Yufeng was also present at the meeting.

Ambassador Sun Gongyi congratulated Ambassador Dillum on assuming office, saying that the bilateral relations between China and Mauritius have become stronger over time and new progress has been continuously made. In 2018, the mutual visits between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mauritian Prime Minister Jugnauth have opened a new chapter for the development of bilateral relations. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic this year, the two countries have helped each other and tided over the difficulties together, which once again demonstrated the profound friendship between China and Mauritius. In recent days, diplomats from the Chinese Embassy have participated in voluntary actions to clean up the beaches, contributing to the restoration and protection of the environment in Mauritius. The Chinese Embassy wishes to continue maintaining close communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of Mauritius to promote practical cooperation between the two countries and deepen the friendly bilateral relations as well.

For his part, Ambassador Dillum underscored that Mauritius cherishes its traditional friendly relations with China while expressing gratitude to China for its support and assistance to the economic and social development of Mauritius over the years. At the difficult moment when Mauritius tackled the COVID-19 pandemic and the oil spill of MV Wakashio, China has immediately lent a helping hand, for which Mauritius feels deeply grateful. Mauritius is willing to work with China, continuing to exert influence of high-level visits on the relations between the two countries and maintain friendly exchanges at all levels. As China has valuable experience in development, Mauritius looks forward to strengthening exchanges and developing mutually beneficial cooperation with China in the fields of information technology, environmental protection, and maritime economy, and so on.
