Ambassador Sun Gongyi Meets with the Newly Appointed Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC)

On September 16, 2020, Ambassador Sun Gongyi met with Mr. Vêlayoudom Marimoutou, newly appointed Secretary General of the IOC, at the Chinese Embassy. The two sides exchanged views on strengthening practical cooperation between China and the IOC.

Ambassador Sun Gongyi congratulated Mr. Vêlayoudom Marimoutou on assuming office as Secretary General of the IOC and commended the important role played by the IOC in promoting regional peace and development, underscoring that China, as the first observer state of the IOC, always attaches great importance to developing relations with the IOC and actively supports its work as well. China wishes to strengthen pragmatic cooperation with the IOC and its member states in the fields of marine economy, health and training so as to promote the sustainable economic and social development of regional countries.

For his part, Mr. Vêlayoudom Marimoutou expressed his gratitude to China for its long-term support and assistance to the IOC, saying that China has made enormous strides in a short period of time and obtained world-renowned achievements. He looked forward to utilizing the IOC as a platform to enhance exchanges and cooperation between its member states and China in the fields of economic and social development, culture, education and health, thus making more contributions to regional and global prosperity and stability.
