On November 2, 2020, Ambassador Sun Gongyi attended a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the 186th Anniversary of the arrival of indentured labourers in Mauritius held by the Mauritian government in Port Louis. As Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Ambassador Sun Gongyi laid wreaths to pay homage to the memory of some half a million indentured labourers together with Mauritian Prime Minister Jugnauth, Deputy Prime Minister Obeegadoo, Vice-Prime Minister Dookun-Luchoomun, Vice-Prime Minister Husnoo, Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage Teeluck, and Opposition Leader Boolell.

In their addresses, Prime Minister Jugnauth and Minister Teeluck underscored that more than a century ago, indentured labourers from India, China and the African continent overcame the adversities of the natural environment and colonial oppression, made important contributions to the economic development of Mauritius and constituted a major part of Mauritian nationals afterwards. Mauritian people should engrave history in their mind, inherit the spirit of industriousness of their ancestors, and contribute to the development of their country.

The Anniversary of the Arrival of Indentured Labourers in Mauritius is celebrated each year on November 2. The Mauritian government organizes official commemorative activities annually at the Aapravasi Ghat site which was inscribed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2006 and holds key importance in the history of Mauritius.
